About the map

MM

Our interactive map aims to showcase Montreal's sites, organizations and events associated with the Hungarian community from the early 1900s to the present day: users can explore 100 years of "Hungarian Montreal" history by consulting descriptions, photos, documents, links and, if possible, interviews added to each site.

Thanks to the development of the University of Debrecen, users can "stroll" Montreal with the help of an interactive map and discover the past and present of Hungarians in the city. The map preserves Montreal's unique heritage of the last hundred years, provides opportunities for further research and we hope it may serve as a model for other communities.

The map is constantly being updated/upgraded, new information and documents are added, and further research and feedback is used to refine the information on the map.

What is on the map?

The map features key sites, organisations and events related to Hungarian immigration and the Hungarian diaspora in Montreal.

The map aims to provide a comprehensive picture of the main sites of Hungarian presence in Montreal over the past 100 years, including organisations that no longer exist as well as new initiatives. It is not a directory of all businesses with a Hungarian connection or with a Hungarian owner, which is perhaps not even possible. It presents places that were or are connected to the lives of Hungarian immigrants, to Hungarian culture and identity in the broad sense, that were identified in various sources (e.g., interviews, secondary sources) as important Hungarian sites, or that supported Hungarians and their aspirations in Montreal.

For each site (whose addresses are based on official or online data), we tried to provide the following information (where available) in English and Hungarian:

- date of opening and closing

- short description

- image and/or document gallery

- interview clips (audio or video)

- links for further information

What is not on the map?

There are sites/organizations that we have data on, but unfortunately we have not yet been able to link a verifiable address  to them.

Please contact us if you have such data or any other information for such locations.

We also welcome any comments or feedback on the website or the map!
